Vesak in Saudi

by Mohammed Rasooldeen in Riyadh

The Sri Lankan Embassy in association with the Sri Lankan Expatriates Society SLES organised a grand Vesak ceremony in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Sunday.

The program started in the morning by releasing 15 pigeons to spread the message of peace in this part of the world. The program was held under the patronage of the Sri Lankan Ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar.

The Sri Lanka Expatriates Society President Rizvi Mansoor, senior officials of the society, diplomatic officials and prominent members of the community were present at the function, which inaugurated the Vesak celebrations here.

Ambassador Ansar stated that for the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Mission in Riyadh a Vesak ceremony has been organised in a fitting manner for the benefit of the Sri Lankan workers here. The embassy premises were well illuminated, and dotted with the Vesak flags. Ansar said that the embassy will open a dansala during the next six days in the evenings to host the people who come to see the Vesak lanterns at the embassy.

The Sri Lanka Expatriates Society will hold an evening function to mark Vesak on Thursday. The program includes Bakthi Geeta, a perahera and concerts to highlight the significance of the event. The Society has also organised a lantern competition where a number of Lankan Expatriates are expected to participate.

The students of the Sri Lankan International School will be taking part in the Vesak day program of the SLES.
