by Sarath Malalasekera and Munneswaram Group Correspondent The Wennappuwa Police yesterday morning seized a consignment of heroin valued over Rs. 25 million on the Marawila coast while attempting to smuggle it into the country from Tuticorin, India. The Wennappuwa police also arrested a person who is alleged to have brought the consignment of heroin into the country from Tuticorin. Investigations directed by Wayamba DIG Seneviratne Banda and conducted by Chilaw Senior SP Upali Ranasinghe revealed that the consignment of heroin had been brought to the country in a boat. The boat alleged to have transported the consignment of heroin was also seized in the Negombo Police area. A woman resident of Chilaw who is alleged to have assisted the main suspect was also arrested by the Police. DIG Seneviratne Banda had deployed a special police team to arrest the local dealers who are involved in the smuggling racket. Naththandiya ASP W. Senaratne, Inspector Nimal Fernando, HQI, Wennappuwa Police, Inspector Sunil Jayalath, SIs Wasantha, Karunarathna, Malcome, Sergeants Mutukumarana, Saman Kumara, Constables Tilak Herath, Dassanayake and Rajapaksa are assisting in the investigations. |
