Executive Committee system of govt, country's foremost need - Ronnie de Mel

by Matara Central correspondent

The system of Government now prevailing based on divided political parties is the sole cause for all ills in the country. This system is a stumbling block for the restoration of peace and all other development activities, some affluent leaders of political parties are more bent on destroying the country rather than protecting it. An Executive Committee system of Government free of politics aimed at accelerated development of the country is the urgent and foremost need of the country, said the National List MP (PA) Ronnie de Mel when he spoke at a press conference held recently at his co-ordinating office at Devinuwara. This press conference was convened to explain how he and his wife Mallika de Mel (PA) MP for Matara District will disburse the funds released to them under the decentralised budget.

He further said: 'The Committee system in force under the Donoughmore system of Government that prevailed then was greatly responsible for the development of the country.

'A similar committee system of Government would be more beneficial to us. In the year 1947, the most developed country in the Asian region was Sri Lanka. Because of the world war, Japan was ruined, while China faced the same calamity, because of civil wars.

'Countries such as Singapore, Korea and Malaysia too suffered heavily due to the war. Sri Lanka at that time was above Malaysia economically. The economy of our country at present is at zero level.

'The decentralized budget system was initially introduced by me as Minister of Finance. If not for my action funds would not have been properly and equally disbursed throughout the districts. The failure to adopt economic development oriented to meet the needs of the ever increasing population is the cause for all ills prevailing today.

'As a National list MP I have allocated funds from decentralised budget to cover all activities of the district irrespective of political differences. The only sports school in the district of Matara is at Dickwella, the Vijitha Madhya Maha Vidyalaya (Dickwella Central College) Rs. 2 million will be allocated to modernise that school at the same time, two more millions of rupees will be allocated to the National School at Devinuwara for the purpose of introducing Information Technology.

'In addition funds will be allocated to develop the infrastructure in the district'.

Mrs. de Mel also spoke.
