The Norwegian delegation led by the Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen met President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on May 27 at the President's House. The Norwegian Minister briefed the President on the current situation of the peace process. He said that they were working on an agenda and have requested the Government and the LTTE to submit their proposals regarding the proposed agenda, a press release from the Presidential Secretariat said. The President said that all core issues relating to the future of the North and East should be included in the agenda. Commenting on the Interim Administration the President said that it should be discussed in the context of core issues. The Interim Administration should not be implemented until the core issues are finalised. The President commented favourably on the improved atmosphere relating to the freedom of movement and access to the North and East. The President reiterated her continuing commitment to the peace process and said the any suggestions she might make with regard to the agenda will only be with the objective of strengthening the peace process and its final outcome in the larger interest of the entire country. Former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar participated in the discussion. Norwegian Ambassador John Westburg, Erik Solheim and other officials of the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo participated. |
