Currents defeat bid to raise Bangladesh ferry

DHAKA, May 27 (Reuters) - Strong currents have defeated efforts to salvage a Bangladesh ferry that sank in a storm last week with at least 140 people on board.

About 15 people were rescued and only 40 bodies have been found so far, officials said on Monday.

Rescuers believe most of the missing are dead and the bodies have either been swept down river or are trapped inside the vessel.

The M.L. Suraha sank on Thursday in the Baleswar river, 12 km (seven miles) from the Bay of Bengal, only three weeks after nearly 500 people were killed in a ferry disaster in the Meghna river further north.

"We are making a last try today (to raise the ferry)," a navigation official said.

The double-decker steel-hulled ferry was heading from Charduani in coastal Pirojepur to the southern industrial district of Khulna when it sank about 340 km (210 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

Ferries provide an important transport link in this flood-prone, low-lying country but the safety record is appalling.

Bangladesh's worst ferry disaster killed 600 people in 1986.
