Weight-lifter Ransilu excels in England by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports correspondent Fifteen-year-old double international from Kingswood College, Kandy - Ransilu Jayatillake who represented Sri Lanka at the 15th Asian Junior Weightlifting Championship in Kankan City in Thailand last month has won a Diploma Certificate in the 105 kilogramme weight category. He lifted a total of 235 kgs by clean and jerking 135 kgs. and snatching 100 kgs. This total lift of 235 kgs is the highest ever lifted by a fifteen year old lifter in Sri Lanka. All three marks are Sri Lanka junior national records. Last year Ransilu won a silver medal at the Asian Junior Powerlifting championships in New Delhi in India. Though barely fifteen years he is present national record holder in the squat event in the 100 kg. category in powerlifting. This versatile iron man from the Randles Hill School is trained by his father the triple international D. U. M. Jayatillake who has represented the country in weightlifting, powerlifting, strength building and body building. Ransilu Jayatillake with quite a big build for a grade ten student has created more than forty junior records at various levels and weight categories in weightlifting and power lifting. This young lifter is a fine prospect for the future and should bring honour to the motherland in both power lifting and weight lifting. He trains at the Kandy Sports Club Gymnasium and has been encouraged to perform at optimum level by the club officials. |
