Institute of Directors second AGM

The Second Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) was held recently at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi.

Since its inception two years ago (April 2000) the Institute has far exceeded expectations moving from strength to strength with the support of its 750-strong membership of corporate leaders.

The outgoing President of the Institute, Ken Balendra in his address said that the membership of the Institute has swelled during the last year with more and more corporate leaders displaying a keen interest in the Institute and its numerous activities. He added that this is strength enough to fulfil the Institute's mission of being the apex organisation representing the interests of corporate directors in Sri Lanka.

The regular mechanisms generated by the Institute to update Directors on emerging trends in the business world, in the local and international arena takes the form of breakfast meetings, email updates, training programs, a newsletter and interactive sessions. Members have displayed a keen interest in supporting these initiatives not only by their valued presence but also by means of sponsorship.

The outgoing President recalled that Ms. Mariana Todorova, Country Director of the World Bank and Chief Guest at the Institute's inaugural meeting enumerated plans to set up a Distance Learning Centre in Sri Lanka. He said that as a key stakeholder, representing the voice of the private sector in Sri Lanka, SLID is proud have had one of its greatest ambitions materialised early this year, with the inauguration of the World Bank funded Distance Learning Centre.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors has marched through two phenomenal years and Chandra Jayaratne speaking on behalf of Ranjit Fernando, the newly appointed President said that the new committee will march on with firm strides to achieve its goal of being the premier organisation for directors in the island. He assured on behalf of the new committee, that SLID hopes to afford its members with greater opportunities to participate in seminars, workshops and conferences in the coming year.
