CITI sets up 'QRC'

The Clothing Industry Training Institute (CITI) has set up a new Quick Response Centre - QRC to cater to needs of manufacturing technology in the clothing industry. This project was initiated 1999 and later received UNIDO assistance to commence operations.

Under this project, a team of Consultants from CITA Hong Kong was awarded the consultancy work on QRC at CTI in December 2001. The main aim of this project is to provide technical services, training and consultancy to the industry. The centre is equipped with automated sophisticated new machinery to meet this challenge.

UNIDO Consultants launched a training program to impart knowledge to CITI technologists and has now reached half way of the program. As a part of the program UNIDO consultants and CITI counterparts organised a seminar on May 11, to create awareness to the Sri Lankan garment manufacturers and the seminar was successfully concluded by over 100 participants representing 40 companies.

The seminar was programed with two lectures and a practical demonstration.

D.P. Gunawardena, Director, CITI addressed the participants to inaugurate the seminar.

Steve Tong, Associated Director, Industry Support Division CITA Hong Kong delivered a lecture on MPS (Modular Production System) and application of MPS to the garment industry. He illustrated the need for QRC concepts as one of the strategies to overcome the Quota Free Environment.

Peter Wilson, UNIDO Technical Expert conducted a lecture on World Trend and the Need for QRC. He spoke on future challenges on consumer demand and retailing in US Apparel Market. He outlined the strategies and highlighted the need for modular production system.

In addition to these lectures Kapila Jinadasa, Clothing Technologist in the QRC demonstrated the practical approach to the Modular Production System. A modular production line was displayed to all participants at Quick Response Centre. CITI is now in the process of providing this service to the industry who ware eagerly awaiting to adopt this new manufacturing philosophy to achieve a competitive edge.
