Development Squad in battle to avoid follow on

by Chris Dhambarage

The BCCSL Development Squad were battling to avoid the follow on after India 'A' compiled a massive first innings total of 474 runs on day two of their three day match continued at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

The visitors continued their dominance with skipper Harikesh Kanitkar and P. Patel also completing half centuries. In fact Kanitkar came closer of becoming the third centurion of the innings as he fell for 97 having struck ten boundaries. The Indian skipper had a good work out in their only warm up match before the first unofficial test and batted for over four hours facing 171 deliveries.

Earlier opener Chopra went on to hit a top score of 145 with 17 boundaries adding 57 for the third wicket with Kanitkar. India 'A' then suffered a minor setback losing three wickets for just 22 runs at one stage. However P. Patel joined skipper Kanitkar and the pair further frustrated the fielding side adding 109 runs for the sixth wicket. Patel batting at number seven gave a good account of himself stroking a fluent 51 with five boundaries.

Ganganath Ratnayake was the most impressive bowler for the BCCSL Development Squad with 3 for 96 from 34 overs. Apart from him all others suffered heavily with Thushara, Malinga, Dhammika Perera and Nisitha Rupasinghe capturing a wicket each.

The BCCSL Development Squad in their reply got off to a poor start losing opener Rally Tissera in the sixth over of the innings. However Shantha Kalawitigoda and skipper Michael Vandort repaired the damage with a second wicket stand of 82 runs. Kalawitigoda fell just five runs short of a well deserved half century having struck seven boundaries off 92 balls.
