Jeewantha Karunarathna was awarded one of twenty scholarships of University of New South Wales for actuarial studies. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding young Australians with proven records of academic distinction, self-motivation and leadership potential. It is an intellectually challenging program, which requires exceptional ability in mathematics, statistics and their applications to business. He was selected from 821 applicants from all over Australia and the 501 interviews that were conducted in last December. The award was presented at Clency Auditorium of UNSW in Sydney on the 15 March 2002. Undergraduates who excel in this scholarship program are sought after in the insurance industry. He is an all rounder with interest in sports, music, drama and art. He was a Rock Esteddfod performer. He is the recipient of numerous awards and medals in western dancing, classical guitar, cricket, badminton and swimming. He is the eldest son of Upali and Badra Karunarathna of Canberra. Upali was a teacher of mathematics at Ananda College.
