Second US Naval Ship to visit Colombo

Colombo, May 8, The United States Embassy announced today that the USS Sides (FFG-14), a US Navy guided missile frigate, will arrive in Colombo on Saturday, May 11 for a four-day port visit. It will be the second such US Naval visit injust over two weeks.

While here, crew-members will have a chance to meet Sri Lankans, experience Sri Lankan culture, sightsee, shop and enjoy Colombo's many attractions.

The USS Sides is based in San Diego, California and has a crew of approximately 180. It is the eighth ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigates Commissioned 30 May 1981, the USS Sides is named after Admiral John H. Sides, one of the early proponents of modern naval missilery. The mission of the USS Sides is ocean patrol and escort for replenishment groups, amphibious forces and military convoys. The USS Sides' ability to accelerate and decelerate rapidly and the capabilities of her armament and combat systems make it particularly well suited for her designated missions.

The USS Sides Commanding Officer, Commander Octavio Manduley, said, "This port visit is a great opportunity for our sailors to learn about Colombo and Sri Lanka, to meet the local citizens, and have some time for rest and recreation. The United States shares many common interests with Sri Lanka and the other countries of the Indian Ocean region, including mutual security and the prosperity of our people. Port visits like this one help contribute to those goals. The Sri Lankan and United States Navies share many traditions and a common background. We look forward to ongoing professional exchanges and development of our relationship."

The Sides is currently in the midst of a regularly scheduled deployment that includes operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the international war on terrorism.

The USS Hopper, a guided missile destroyer, visited Colombo late last month. It was the first US Naval visit in eight years.
