Bread prices to remain stable

The delegation of Bakery Owners Association pledged not to effect any change in the price of bread following a request made by Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake at a special meeting held at the Ministry yesterday.

The Association president Mr. Parakrama Dassanayake who led a seven member delegation stated that the membership will refrain from making any changes in the current price of bread and that it will monitor the situation very closely before a decision is taken. He said that he was confident that any change would not be in the immediate future.

Minister Karunanayake whilst thanking the Association for their decision pointed out that the Government was aware of the problems faced by the bakers and said that he appreciated very much the contribution made in the greater interest of the public.

The Minister assured to extend his fullest support to the Association for the development of the industry. Minister Karunanayake also announced that once the Consumer Protection Act, which is now being formulated, comes into operation within the next two months it will be mandatory for all bakery owners to form an association where matters concerning them could be collectively taken. They could either join the existing one or form their association, but it is compulsory, or the license will be cancelled he added.

The Minister also said that he could meet the Association every three months in order to ascertain any existing issues and offer remedial action. He offered the CWE for storage free of charge in the event the Association decided to directly import flour from any source. He said that the CWE could also under take retail sales of bread if they so desire.
