Peace process offers fresh opportunities to protect children - President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday told the United Nations World Summit on Children in New York, USA that effort for a negotiated peace, which recommenced recently, offers fresh opportunities for attempts to protect children in conflict areas.She told the United Nations (UN) that one of Sri Lanka's greatest challenges in recent times has been the protection of children from the impact of the 18 years old civil conflict. She also said that the country faces the problems of child recruitment as combatants by the rebels.President Kumaratunga also outlined measures taken by the Government to prevent child abuse and child labour.The United Nations World Summit on Children opened yesterday in New York and will conclude tomorrow. About 3000 delegates including 60 Presidents, Prime Ministers, monarchs and over 200

child delegates are attending it. In addition, another 3000 representatives of NGOs are among the participants.
