Destabilising peace process is JVP's ultimate goal - UNP media spokesman

by Ananda Kannangara

The JVP's sole intention is to destabilise the on going peace process and take the country through another dark era with the objective of achieving their ultimate goals, UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatilleka told the Daily News yesterday.

Quoting a statement made by JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe from London to its leadership in Colombo, Mr. Karunatilleka vehemently condemned the JVP's attitude of staging series of protest campaigns and demonstrations on the streets against the peace initiative launched between the Government and the LTTE several months ago.

" At a time when the international community is focusing a positive attention on this matter it is unethical for the JVP leadership to urge its men to commit acts of violence on the roads and create panic among peace loving people ", he said.

"If Somawansa Amarasinghe who is residing in the UK with his children, engaged in large scale business activities had urged the Sinhala community in London to show their anger and displeasure regarding the peace process in our country, he would have definitely been deported from London with his children for making such a provoking statement", he said.

"However people in the country will never forget the dark period of 1987 when the JVP came on to the streets and made protest campaigns against India's intervention in our country".

He said " During that period, the JVP destroyed not only millions worth of public property but also killed important personalities such as Grama Niladaris, cultivation officers, teachers, principals, farmers, office workers, labourers, artistes, trade union leaders, politicians, intellectuals and also several members of the Mahasangha.

"The JVP prevented people from buying goods and other essential food items such as milk foods, dhal and unions imported from India and also made death threats against those who sold Indian goods here".

"Meanwhile, Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe ultimately sought the help of India to flee Sri Lanka", he said.

"Therefore, the peace loving people of this country mus not be misled over the provoking statement made by Somawansa Aamarasinghe from London at this important moment when the country has jutt commenced the peace process", Mr. Karunatilleka added.
