Colombo Plan DAP's guidebook launched At the 238th session of the Colombo Plan Council Meeting held recently the Council President, Seiichiro Otuska and Ambassador of Japan received the first copy of the Guidebook" A Guide to Mobilise Businesses / Workplaces to Prevent Drug Abuse in Asia" from Dr. U. Sarat Chandran, Secretary General of the Colombo Plan. The Guidebook was produced by the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program (DAP) in conjunction with its initiative "Seminar/workshop on Mobilising/Businesses/Workplaces to Prevent Drug Abuse in Asia' held from December 18 to 21 last year in Bangkok, which was funded by the Government of Japan. This initiative was implemented in view of the fact that the majority of drug abusers in Asia are gainfully employed in the workplaces and still in their productive years. The economic and human costs of drug abuse for businesses are immense in terms of lost productivity and health care costs. The Guidebook will assist member countries, particularly in encouraging governments, businesses and NGOs to plan and implement drug abuse prevention programs in their respective worksplaces. A Guide to Mobilise Businesses/workplaces to Prevent Drug Abuse in Asia, elaborates the salient features in implementing a drug free workplace program as follows: How to initiate a drug free workplace program Formulation of a drug free workplace policy and committee; Education and training of employers, supervisors and employees; Implementing primary prevention program and activities in the workplace; Drug screening in the workplace and treatment and rehabilitation of high-risk employees and Employee assistance program. |
