Lanka make clean sweep of indoor cricket series By Chris Dhambarage The Sri Lanka indoor cricket team made a clean sweep defeating the touring England indoor cricket team by 71 runs in the third and final indoor cricket test match played at the Austasia Sports Complex in Thalawathugoda yesterday. The Lankans put up their best performance in the series and conceded only six runs to the Englishmen after they had compiled 77 runs from their allotted 16 overs. England never looked like reaching their target and lost their way completely against some spirited bowling and backed up by some outstanding fielding. Earlier, England put up an improved performance on the field and restricted Sri Lanka to 77 from their allotted 16 overs. The Lankans failed to make a good start and were up against some tight bowling and good fielding from the Englishmen. This was a creditable performance from the visitors after having conceded over one hundred runs to the home side in their first two tests played earlier. Sri Lanka scored 122 and 112 respectively in the first two tests but this time they were under some kind of pressure and really struggled mid way in the innings. They were badly placed at the end of 10 overs having collected just 35 runs and were struggling to put up a challenging total. The Lankans recovered somewhat thereafter and reached 57 runs at the end of 12 overs. Sri Lanka's most experienced pair of skipper Asela Pathirana and Sanjeewa Jayaratne then set about their task in style adding 20 runs during the last four overs of the innings. Their contribution would have been even much higher if not for a couple of dismissals. Nevertheless both came into their own in the last two overs and added the finishing touches with some intelligent batting. |
