We must march towards a better and prosperous tomorrow - Thondaman

P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

Minister for Housing and Plantation Infrastructure and Leader of the CWC, Arumugam Thondaman said the CWC's recent resounding victories at both the General and Local Elections particularly in the Nuwara Eliya district was the verdicts given not only by the Tamils, but by all communities, the Sinhalese, Muslims and others. Therefore, his Ministry's and his organisations duty was to look after the interests of all communities without any bias or partiality.

Minister Thondaman was speaking at the swearing in ceremony of the recently elected CWC members to the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council including the Deputy Mayor Ponniah Sivarajah. Mr. Thondaman congratulating the newly elected Mayor, Chandana Karunaratne, and his new team of seven members said the newly elected members were lively and dynamic young men, who will positively help bring Nuwara Eliya to its old glory but a decent place for its residents to live happily.

He said Nuwara Eliya in the past had become a shanty town without any progress or development. Hence, he said it was the cardinal principle of every resident of this town to participate in its development activities and pull it out from the present appalling conditions.

Minister Thondaman said that the country is facing drastic and progressive changes to re-restore peace and amity among all communities and thus march towards a better and prosperous tomorrow in all spheres. He called upon everyone to involve themselves in such a task.

He said unlike in the past, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has given him very important ministries under his purview. Therefore, his sacred duty and task was to deliver the goods to the citizens of the country and his entire service and work will be dedicated to the needs and aspirations of the masses.

Earlier, hundreds of people accorded a grand reception to the minister and his party at the Municipal Council Hall. Mayor Chandana Karunaratne said the present Minister's grandfather late Sauviyamoorthy Thondaman was a statesman, who had been respected by the entire country and its people for the services rendered. He said they were happy that such a void has been filled by the present Minister Arumugam Thondaman, who was all out to serve the country and its people.

Acting Government Agent G. P. M. Kumarasiri, V. Radhakrishnan, L. Nehruji, R. D. Piyasiri, L. Nehruji, a Former Deputy Mayor and the present Deputy Mayor P. Sivarajah were among those who spoke.
