In order to mark the peace and ceasefire agreement signed between the government and the LTTE the Social Development Foundation, the North and East Provincial Council and the National Youth Council have made arrangements to hold ten youth friendship camps in the North and the East. Due to the long standing ethnic war the youths in the North and East, were isolated from society. Their problems were heaped without any solutions for them. Due to this uneasy life and due to the dilemma of their future they are mentally depressed. In order to do away with this unhealthy situation the organisers of the youth camp project wish to provide an opportunity to discuss their problems and to propose their solutions to the relevant authorities, and to provide a platform to make them known to each other. The camps will be held at Jaffna, Trincomalee, Ampara, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mannar. The inaugural youth friendship camp was held at Erukkalampili Maha Vidyalaya on April 19 and 20. 300 youths from Mannar, Nanattan, Madhu and Manthei Provincial Secretariat divisions participated. Senior officials of the government, and LTTE organisation also participated at the camp. It is decided to launch a youth exchange program among the youth clubs in the North and East. |
