Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando yesterday instructed the Sri Lankan mission officials in New Delhi to take necessary measures to ensure security of Buddhagaya temple complex and Buddhist monks living there. A dispute between two Buddhist monks living in the temple complex had gone to an extent where police had arrested one of the monks. A team of high officials from the Sri Lanka Maha Body Society met Minister Fernando yesterday at his official residence along with Ministers Ravi Karunanayake and Dr. Jayalath Jayawardhana and requested the Foreign Minister to intervene and bring a speedy solution to the issue. The Maha body officials, led by Maha Body Society President and Sanghanayake to Japan Venerable Banagala Upatissa Nayake Thera, also requested the Minister to ensure the safety of other Buddhist monks in the temple complex. While emphasising the fact that the foreign office is not in a position to intervene the judicial procedure in this connection, Minister Fernando has pledged that every possible step will be taken for the safety of the temple complex and resident Buddhist monks with the cooperation of the Indian government. Senior officials from Sri Lanka High Commission in Delhi will be in Buddhagaya today under the instructions of the Minister Fernando to look into the matter. Venerable Diviyagaha Yasassi Nayake Thera and Madapatha Dhammasara Thera had also participated in yesterday's meeting with the Minister. |
