Pakistan police arrest protesting civil servants QUETTA, Pakistan, April 24 (AFP) - Pakistani police Wednesday arrested dozens of provincial government employees demanding higher wages, a senior police officer said. "We have arrested around 43 demonstrators to maintain law and order in the city," city police chief Abdil Ali told AFP. He said the employees in Quetta, capital of the southwestern Baluchistan province, were seized after they staged a sit-in strike to demand a 40 percent wage hike. Police arrested 79 people in similar protests on Monday, bringing the total number of arrests to 122. Officials said the provincial government earlier this month agreed to allow a 20 percent increase but some employees refused the raise and went on strike. |
