Matara SC win div. II soccer final

At the final of the Division II soccer tournament conducted and held under the auspices of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, Matara SC emerged victorious with a 4-2 win over their rival Colombo Soccer Promoters Club of Colombo.

This game was played in the presence of a large crowd gathered at the open grounds of Uyanwatta esplanade, Matara. On entering the field, both teams were given a rousing welcome. Arrangements made for the game was superb.

In the first 18 minutes of play both teams played attractive and constructive soccer. Passing game was a treat to watch. In the 19th minute of play, playmaker C. Gunaratna (No. 9) of the Matara SC scored the first goal for his club, and that was the only goal till the end of first half of the game.

After a few minutes of the start of the second session of play Matara SC captain R. B. Weerappuli scored the second goal. The third goal for Matara SC was scored two minutes later. On a penalty awarded, C. Gunaratna of the Matara SC converted it for the 4th goal.

Fifteen minutes before the final whistle was blown two quick goals scored by the host team - Colombo Soccer Promoters brought the tally to 4-2. Victorious Matara SC team was awarded the prize money of Rs. 100,000 plus the trophy by Matara Mayor Nimal de Silva, while the runners-up trophy plus the prize of Rs. 50,000 was awarded to the Colombo Soccer Promoters Club of Colombo by Matara Headquarters Inspector P. Hettiarahchi.

All expenses for the game including the prize-money was met from the funds of the Sri Lanka Football Federation. President of the Matara SC Attorney-at-Law Jeyaraj Wijeweera, Attorney-at-Law C. S. Pinidiya, Secretary of the SLFP Sunil Senevi and the president of the Tournament Committee M. T. Fernando gave away individual prizes and certificates.

Matara Sports Club who took to the game of football for the 1st time in the history of the club was given the green light to enter the Division I by the SLFF.
