Gyi wins SL Country golf finals

The Mercedes-Benz Trophy Sri Lanka Country Finals teed-off at 6.30 hrs at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) for the 11th successive year. This tournament was sponsored by Diesel & Motor Engineering Company Ltd. (DIMO), the general importer and distributor for Mercedez-Benz in Sri Lanka.

This tournament which was played after the facelift given to the RCGC with an investment of over Rs. 85 million, was certainly one to remember. There were over 170 participants who took part in this tournament this year. It was a perfect day for golf and the weather couldn't have been better. There was a breeze that helped the players stay cool despite the nail biting anxiety that some experienced with each stroke.

Mercedes-Benz Trophy Sri Lanka country final Stabelford Golf Tournament was conducted according to the following handicap groups over 18 holes.

The winners who are qualified for the Asian Finals are as follows:

Group 'A': 00-12 - Winner Alain Gyi, Runner-up F.J. De Saram.

Group 'B': 12-30 - Winner Jo Il Ko, Runner-up Capt. Navin de Silva.

Group 'C': 21-24 - Winner Sanjaya Gunewardena (Youngest player of the tournament), Runner-up Shivantha de Soysa.

The Asian Finals will be held from the 31st of July till the 2nd of August in Gold Coast Australia. Should the above-mentioned participants qualify from the Asian finals, they will have the opportunity to take part in the World finals, which is scheduled to be held in Stuttgart, Germany later this year.

Throughout the decade long history of this tournament, the Mercedes-Benz Trophy has built a reputation to be on par with the Mercedes-Benz Marque. Hence, the popularity and participation has been increasing from inception.

Out of the last years' participants of the Asian Finals Nanda Karunaratne qualified for the "World finals" in Stuttgart Germany, which will be held from the 2nd till the 7th of May this year.

This tournament is open to members from all the golf clubs in Sri Lanka. As in the past, the winners and the runners-up of the three handicap groups will be sponsored by DIMO to participate in the Asian finals.

The winners of the other attractive prizes for participants on offer were: Nearest to the pin (9th hole) - Rahula Seneviratne, Longest drive (8th hole) - Amrith de Soysa, Wooden spoonist - Mohan Alles, Youngest player - Sanjaya Gunewardena, Hole-in-one - No winner.

The award ceremony was held at the clubhouse later in the evening with an environment set for relaxation.
