MCA Sixes on April 27-28

The magnificent Mercantile Cricket Sixes 2002, which always creates a lot of excitement and certainly proven as good crowd puller over the years, will be held on 27 and 28 April at the MCA grounds, D. S. Senanayake College grounds and Wesley College grounds, commencing at 8.30 a.m.

Thirty five teams have entered the tournament, conducted annually by the Mercantile Cricket Association, and sponsored for the 8th successive year by Union Assurance Ltd.

The tournament simultaneously conducted at all three venues on Saturday will be continued on Sunday from the quarter-finals onwards only at the MCA grounds.

To make the tournament more viable, the tournament committee this time has introduced a "Plate" for the 3rd place, played between the two losing semi-finalists.

Hatton National Bank regained the title (after a lapse of three years) last year beating John Keells Group in the final.

The winners will receive the Union Assurance Ltd Challenge Trophy, certificates and a cash award of Rs. 15,000.

The runners-up will receive the Union Assurance Ltd Challenge Trophy, certificates and a cash of Rs. 10,000.

The second runner-up will receive the brand new Union Assurance Ltd. "Plate", certificates and a cash award of Rs. 5,000

The four special awards on offer are - 'Best Batsman', 'Best Bowler', 'Most Sixes' and 'Man-of-the-Final'.

The teams:

At the MCA grounds - Hatton National Bank (top seeded), Habib Bank AG Zurich, Akbar Bros, Union Assurance Ltd, Rogers Group, David Peiris Motor Co. Ltd, Data Entry, Bartleet Group, Singer Industries, Sampath Bank, Suntel, Hirdaramani's and HVA Lanka (13 teams).

At D. S. Senanayake College grounds

Commercial Bank, Shaw Wallace & Hedges, SriLankan Airlines, Airport and Aviation, Access International, Janashakthi Insurance, Upali Group, James Finlays, Lion Shipping, Mabroc Teas, SriLankan Catering Services, Singer Sri Lanka and Swarnakalum Group (13 teams).

At the Wesley College grounds

Nawaloka Group, Lanka Orix Leasing, Slimline Group, ACL Cables, East West Marketing Ltd, JL Morisons, Merchant Credit Bank, Pan-Asia Bank and John Keells Group (bottom seeds) (9 teams)

All this was revealed to the media, on Tuesday at the official handing over of the sponsorship cum media briefing held at the MCA Board room.
