Jaffna University team the attraction

A team from Jaffna University will create history when after almost two decades they will participate in the most popular "Charles Robinson Memorial" seven -a side Hockey Tournament organised by the Matale Old Thomians' Association, Colombo Branch which is scheduled to be conducted for the sixth consecutive year on Sunday May 12 at Police Park, Bambalapitiya, commencing at 8.00 a.m.

The team from Jaffna will foster goodwill and have been invited to participate in the Tournament in support of the Government peace moves.

Eighteen outstanding teams from all parts of the Hockey playing districts namely, Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Badulla, Wennappuwa and Galle have been invited to play. In addition all four service teams who have been participating from the inception of this Tournament have expressed their desire and willingness to compete this year as well.

The teams have been slotted into 4 Groups namely A, B, C and D with the draw of the Tournament, the Jaffna University team in Group B , alongside Sri Lanka Army, Kandy Malay CC, Police and the Kotelawala defence Academy team.

Group A will comprise of Sri Lanka Navy, B.R.C., Park SC and STC Mt. Lavinia.

Drawn in Group C are STC Matale, Malay CC, Old Anandians, CH and FC and Old Uvaites. Group D comprises of Air Force, CR and FC, Colts CC and Christ Church. Forty matches will be worked out in all on two fields.

The winners will receive Rs 10,000, a challenge trophy and a replica while the first runner up will receive Rs 7,500 with a challenge trophy and a replica. Second runner up will receive Rs 5000 and individual replicas .

There will be also be an award for the "Most outstanding hockey Player" selected by a panel of past Sri Lankan Hockey players.
