Robber gang nabbed after gun battle by Kandy District Group Correspondent A gang of robbers who plundered a jewellery shop in Akurana were fleeing with their loot in a jeep when they were hunted by a joint police team from the Ankumbura and Katugastota police stations. The jeep carrying the culprits skidded off the road and came to a halt after hitting a culvert along the Hinnawelatenna-Poojapitiya Road, at which point a fierce gun battle ensued between the robbers and the police team. According to SSP Asoka Ratnaweera of the Kandy Police, in the course of the exchange of fire, a home guard of the Ankumbura Police and a woman suspect in the gang were injured. The police arrested three suspects including the injured woman while two others of the gang fled away. The police also took into custody the jeep involved, along with a stock of cartridges used for automatic firearms. Police teams are currently engaged in tracking down the escapees. |
