CMC to demolish unauthorised structures

Notice has been issued to demolish and remove all unauthorized structures within the city of Colombo before April 30th, Colombo Municipal Commissioner said in a press release yesterday

Orders have been given to the relevant Municipal authorities to demolish and remove all remaining such structures after the deadline and the Colombo Municipal Council will not hold itself responsible for any loss or damage caused in this exercise of its legal rights, release said.

Asked by the Daily News, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage said the demolition of such structures had already been commenced and some 20 of them were removed.

He pointed to Kochchikade, Hettiyawatta and the vicinity of the Castle Street hospital as the worst affected areas by unauthorised structures.

Adding that shanties and other forms of residences are not threatened by this exercise, he said this was only for the unauthorised commercial structures on the pavements and along the road "which caused traffic congestion and difficulties to the public".

All unauthorised structures found to be constructed after April 30 will be demolished and removed without any prior notice, he said.
