Wasp attact kills boy

An eight year old boy in Katana was killed after a swarm of wasps attacked him while he was playing in his home garden.

This was stated at the inquest held on the death of Amanda Udith Hapuarachchi (8) of Kandawala, Katana.

Giving evidence at the inquest, Gammedaliyanage Dona Daisy Meriah (47) a nurse and the mother of the deceased said that the deceased was her youngest son and the fourth child of the family. He was a student of Asamulla Maha Vidyalaya.

She said, there was a swarm of wasps in a room attached to the garage of the house. When my son was playing, the ball hit the swarm and it was disturbed. This happened on April 22. Around 9.30 a.m, I heard my son shouting and went there immediately to see wasps swarmed around him. I removed his clothes and took him to the Negombo General Hospital where he was given initial treatment. Subsequently, the child was transferred to the Children's Hospital, Colombo where he succumbed to his injuries.

The City Coroner Edward Ahangama returned a verdict of accidental death due to wasp stings.
