Colombo National Hospital incident: Suspects granted bail by Sarath Malalasekera Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojani Kusala Weerawardena yesterday granted bail for the eleven suspects who had been remanded in connection with the Colombo National Hospital incident. The suspects were released on surety bail in Rs.10,000 each and directed to appear in court on May 22, 2002. Earlier these suspects were identified at an identification parade held by the Maligakanda Acting Magistrate Lloyd Gray. Eleven other suspects who were not identified at the parade and who were on bail were yesterday present in court. They were directed to appear in court on May 22. Eight prosecution witnesses, six doctors and two police officers who were on duty on the day of the incident identified the suspects. When the case was called yesterday, Ajith Pathirana and Yasantha Perera who appeared for the suspects moving for bail submitted to court that the doctor had earlier told the Police that only five persons assaulted him. Pathirana said that some of the suspects taken into custody and remanded were innocent. They were never at the scene of incident, Pathirana said. State Counsel Ms. Aysha Jinasena appeared with Chief Inspector A.R. Edirisinghe, OIC, Maradana Police. Investigations into the incident is directed by Colombo DIG Bodhi Liyanage and conducted by Colombo Central Senior SP Lucky Dissanayake and assisted by Chief Inspector A.R. Edirisinghe, OIC, Maradana Police, Inspector Priynatha Wijenayake, OIC, CDB and SI Nimal Perera of the Maradana Police. |
