Chamber of Commerce delegation visits Jaffna for second time

by Jaffna special correspondent

Mr. Chandra Embuldeniya, President, Colombo Chamber of Commerce led a team of forty seven traders, industrialists and entrepreneurs from the south for the second time to Jaffna and met their counterparts - the Jaffna Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yalpanam. Mr. Ratnalingam Jeyasegaran, President, Jaffna Chamber of Commerce and K. Pooranachandran, President, Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yalpanam presided at two separate meetings where the members of the delegation introduced themselves to the assembly of marketeers and sales promoters.

Mr. Chandra Embuldeniya said that the Ceasefire Agreement has bound the entrepreneurs and promoters in the south with the Jaffna traders and small scale industrialists. They have come to promote trade with the traders in Jaffna and to render financial assistance and technical know how to the manufacturers and small scale industrialists in the North. Two foreign banks have consented to function in Jaffna and grant easy credit facilities to the needy. The response from the marketeers and industrialists is bound to increase with their active interaction.

Mr. Ratnalingam Jayasegaran, President, Chamber of Commerce, Jaffna said that he would like to dispel a misunderstanding that is gaining currency in Jaffna. It is contended by some critics that the trade delegation from the South is going to strike a good bargain in Jaffna and carry away the gains to the South. This is far from the truth. In fact they are working in collaboration with us. They are prepared to offer their leadership and know how to enable our members to acquire the necessary commercial skills. Agents would be appointed to market their produce and products in Jaffna. Two foreign banks have come forward to give credit facilities to our entrepreneurs. The influx of goods from the South will not affect our local producers. Instead the local agents will get good commission by sales and the people of Jaffna will have a variety of things to buy.

He added that local produce like onions, tobacco and sea foods are being sent to Colombo in lorries. As a result the farmers and fishermen in Jaffna are able to make a headway financially.
