Govt Press fire: police questions employees

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Borella Police yesterday recorded statements from several employees of the Government Press in connection with Wednesday's fire, which damaged several important documents and court productions.

Among those questioned were two security officers who were on duty at the time of the incident and three others who worked the night shift, an official of the Borella Police told the Daily News.

Officials from the Government Analyst's Department were expected to visit the scene yesterday to examine the cause for the fire which occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara said they could suspect foul play as the fire had damaged some important court productions." Since the fire had broken out only in three places and it could not have been due to a short-circuit."

According to the procedure, printed documents are sent to the Government Printer by Courts to obtain his opinion on such materials.

Mr. Nanayakkara said the fire had damaged three boxes which contained computers, printers and counterfeit notes.

According to Police, the fire broke out around 2.00 am on Wednesday. "The damage caused by this fire has not yet been estimated," an official of the Borella Police said yesterday adding that no arrest has been made so far.

Police had cordoned off the area to avoid any possible tampering with evidence.
