Health Minister visits Jaffna with Rs. 20m equipment,lorry

Twenty million worth of medical equipment and a lorry were the handsome gifts the Minister of Health P. Dayaratne brought to Jaffna on his two days visit to the peninsula.

At the Jaffna Teaching hospital auditorium he met the Director of Jaffna Teaching hospital Dr. Miss. Navamany Kanagaratnam, Mavai Senathirajah MP, Dr. Daya Somasundaram Psychiatrist Jaffna Teaching hospital, Dr. Rajendra Prasad former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Jaffna University and the heads of Government medical institutions in the peninsula.

Addressing the medical professionals he said that when the Prime Minister visited Jaffna he promised to give a Coblat unit to the Tellipallai Cancer hospital. This hospital is in the high security zone. Nevertheless action would be taken to give a coblat plant as promised.

Dr. Daya Somasundaram Psychiatrist Jaffna Teaching hospital said that there is a shortage of psychiatrists at Tellipallai and Manthikai hospitals. The cadre for nurses have not been filled.

The psychiatrist division of Manthikai hospital is 100 years old. Today it an eye sore to the medical fraternity. The Minister should remedy the short-comings of the psychiatrist section.

He said some psychiatrists serving in outstations are willing to come to Jaffna and serve the people. Vacancies for psychiatrists and doctors should be advertised to draw them in.

Mavai Senathirajah M.P. urged the Minister to transfer some doctors who have been serving in Jaffna for a long time. They are willing to go so that they could enhance their medical qualification.

He said that when ministers come to Jaffna they promise to do everything we ask for. But after going to Colombo they say that the Treasury is empty and they cannot help.

He requested the Minister not to give the same reply after going to Colombo. The Minister he said is one who can identify the needs of the area and fulfil what he promises.
