Postal voting on May 9 -10 by Manjula Fernando All is ready to hold elections in the 17 local government bodies on May 20, an Elections Department spokesman said yesterday. A fresh date to hold the election for these local authorities was set due to pending court cases filed by the contesting political parties against the rejection of nomination lists by returning officers. The nomination lists were rejected due to discrepancies in the lists. He said that the printing of ballot papers and ballot cards have now been completed and the postal ballot papers will be issued to Post offices on May 2 to be distributed to certifying officers. Marking of ballot papers is scheduled on May 9 and 10. The certifying officers are required to return the marked papers before 4.00 pm on May 20. The Elections Department took action to print fresh ballot papers for seven local government authorities of which the judgement was given in favour of the political parties. They are the Panadura UC, Kesbewa PS, Kalutara PS, Mihintale PS, Tirappane PS, Hali Ela PS and Ratnapura PS. The election will be held in the following local government bodies Colombo, Galle and Ratnapura Municipal Councils, Katunayake/Seeduwa, Peliyagoda, Panadura, Tangalle Urban Councils and Kesbewa, Kalutara, Ambagamuwa, Nattandiya, Mihintale, Tirappane, Hali Ela, Moneragala, Buttala and Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabhas. Elections to 222 local authorities were held on March 20. Elections in the North and East exempting the Sinhalese dominated areas of the Ampara District was postponed for one year. |
