Sri Lanka and the Maldives have had warm friendly relations for centuries. The two countries' bondage of friendship stretches beyond geographical proximity and is primarily based on the Mutual respect the people share for the respective cultures and traditions. The two countries also enjoy very fruitful co-operation, particularly in trade and tourism.

In view of the friendly relations and mutual co-operation that exist between. The Maldives and Sri Lanka, and the desire of the governments of both countries to strengthen economic and commercial relations to serve the mutual interest of both countries, The Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) and The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Sri Lanka on September 6, 2001.

This took place when over 50 business leaders from the Seven SAARC Countries visited Sri Lanka to attend the 22nd Executive Committee Meeting of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) at The Hotel Taj Samudra on September 5, 2001. Through this joint co-operation agreement which enhances and strengthens bilateral economic ties of the two countries, encourages, promotes and facilitates effective co-operation with regard to trade, economic and all industrial activities between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The mission's objectives were to identify the areas of co-operation which will be beneficial to both countries, promoting bilateral trade including exports, imports, joint ventures, services and co-operation at government and private level.

During the stay the delegation met several leading organisations and clinched several deals which would have a long-term benefit on both countries.

The FCCISL organised this meeting to enable the delegation to meet leading entrepreneurs of the country. During this meeting a wide range of issues were discussed to strengthen bilateral trade through the MoU signed between MNCCI and FCCISL. Keen interest was shown by the local participants to become members of the Sri Lanka Maldives Business Council to enhance bilateral trade between the two countries. Membership of Sri Lanka - Maldives Business Council is now open for business organisations and individuals interested in business opportunities with the Maldives.
