ACU&S Council `Nompere'

By Ranjan Anandappa

The Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers Sri Lanka launched their inaugural official journal named "Nompere" at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Mass Media, World Trade Centre, Colombo on Wednesday.

The Administrative Secretary of the ACU&S D. C. Camillus Perera speaking on the occasion said that it was a red letter day for the association as it was in a position to publish its firstever official journal after 58 years since its inception. 'Nompere' means - man above all - in French. The present word umpire is derived from the word nompere.

He said that the association was non profit-making and a service-oriented institution in need of financial assistance and hoped the Cricket Board would come to their assistance.

The ACU&S has drawn up many plans for the uplift of the standard of umpiring, but lack of finances have deprived them in implementing many of those. The England Cricket Board (ECB) finances the ACU&S (England), said Camillus Perera.

Bandula Warnapura the first Sri Lanka 'Test' captain and a former president of the ACU&S who presided at the launching ceremony said that he loved the ACU&S for many reasons and regretted that many people did not understand the difficult task that the umpire has to perform , but were quick in finding fault. Warnapura has been assisting the ACU&S in his capacity as the Director Operations Cricket and promised his support in future endeavour of the ACU&S.

He further said that the present day umpire needed something more than just knowing the laws while standing. He emphasised on the importance of man management and how to defuse certain pressure situations during a match.
