Eric, Upul and Ishara for England With fitness concerns over key bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando, the national cricket selectors have named Upul Chandana and Ishara Amarasinghe to join the 16-member Sri Lanka team that leaves for a tour of England on Saturday. Colts fast bowler Eric Upashantha was named as the 16th player in the squad. The original squad comprised only 15 players with the selectors making reservation for an additional fast bowler to be added at the completion of the one-day tournaments in Sharjah and Namibia. Upashantha gets that spot. Leg-spinner Chandana comes in for Muralitharan who is to undergo surgery for his injured left-arm. The star off-spinner is expected to be out of action for at least three weeks which may rule him out of the first Test against England. Fernando is recovering from stiffness in his back and opted out of the Sharjah tour. Both he and Muralitharan are expected to join the squad later subject to fitness. Fernando's place has gone to Amerasinghe, the former Colts right-arm fast bowler who now turns out for NCC in the Premier competition. This is the first time Amerasinghe has been selected to represent the national team. |
