Govt. response, says Pan-Women Group

by Nadira Gunatilleke

For the first time in history of the Local Government elections, an all women independent group comprising 59 candidates is contesting the forthcoming Colombo Municipal Council election under the "Orange" symbol.

The leader of the group named as Independent Group No 1, Attorney-at-Law Ms. Nimalka Fernando said the main objective of their group to increase women participation in politics.

She said all our candidates and supporting agencies will meet on April 20 and re-schedule our election campaign according to the new political developments. We have been receiving a very good response from the general public for our election campaign.

Ms. Fernando said that their group is encouraged by the enormous support received from the public so far. "We have been carrying out a special publicity campaign every weekend", she added.

"We have organised a big event on May 1 at the Mahaweli Centre at 11 am to urge the authorities to allow migrant workers to cast their vote at the forthcoming election. Director, Migrant Services Centre, David Soyza, Ranjan Ramanayake, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and representatives of Women's Organisations are scheduled to attend it. "We have also planned another event on May 11. More details of it will be notified later", she added.
