UNF victory, demonstration of people's power

by Nandaratna Rajapaksha ,Ambalangoda Central Special Correspondent

Sri Lanka being a well-established democracy, from time to time governments are elected in this country according to the free will of the people. For instance, the election of the present government was an unprecedented demonstration of people's power by the citizens of Sri Lanka said Vajira Abeywardena, Minister of Public Administration, Management and Reforms at a meeting held at the auditorium of the Ambalangoda Town Hall. This meeting was held to mark the inauguration of the newly elected urban council of Ambalangoda. Minister Abeywardena was speaking as the chief guest.

The minister said: "As elected representatives of the people our mission should be to serve the people. I too was elected by the masses and the people will evaluate my performance and accordingly they would form their opinion. Depending on their judgement the people will either re-elect or defeat me at the next election.

"People in five of the electorates in the Galle district including Ambalangoda do not have enough access to drinking water. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has already given his approval for the implementation of a substantial development program in the Galle district which entails Rs. Ten Billion. The provision of an efficient water supply scheme and the development of roads in the district will be regarded as priorities under this development plan and the work on these projects will be completed within a period of four years".

Minister Abeywardena complimenting the new chairman G.M.S. de Silva said: "de Silva had maintained an exceptionally good record as chairman of the Ambalangoda UC for many years in the past and in my capacity as the Chief Organiser for the district I affirm my commitment to extend my whole hearted support to de Silva and the UNP organiser for Ambalangoda Upali Siri Sumana in solving the problems faced by the people of Ambalangoda. I wish the chairman and the council well".

De Silva chairman UC said: "this moment of jubilation we share our impressive victory with the people of Ambalangoda.

"The Ambalangoda UC reached a crisis point during previous PA administration. The financial situation of the council is precarious. Our prime responsibility is to improve the living conditions of urban community and in this regard my council will implement short term, medium term and long term programs in all vital spheres of urban development including housing, library facilities, construction of a good drainage system, composting of organic waste, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, expansion of facilities for street hawkers in the town, and a regulated waste disposal system.

"Let's sink party differences and work together for the common good" de Silva said.

Upali Siri Sumana and several others also spoke.
