17th Shell Solar centre opened

Shell Renewables Lanka Limited (SRLL), the market leader in providing solar home systems to unelectrified rural Sri Lanka, opened its 17th Solar Centre in Ruwanwella in Kegalle District, recently. The Solar Centre will serve customers in the Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts and rural areas of the Colombo District, a spokesman for Shell said.

The opening ceremony was attended by Damian Miller, Director Rural Operations, Shell Solar, Pradip Jayewardene, Director, Business Development, Dinukh Fernando, General Manager Shell Renewables Lanka Limited and other members of the senior management team of SRLL.

Shell Renewables, the solar business of the Shell Companies in Sri Lanka, has recorded tremendous growth, in only its second year of operation, and has been recognised as a bench mark company within the rural solar industry, worldwide. SRLL installed over 5,400 systems out of a total of around 10,000 systems installed islandwide in 2001 and has plans to install over 10,000 systems in 2002. In its efforts to serve customers better, Shell Renewables has set up 17 solar centres islandwide, spanning areas from Anuradhapura to Embilipitiya.

With growing government support both at the provincial and central government levels for solar as an alternative to more costly grid extension, the prospects for Shell in Sri Lanka and solar as an alternative for grid electricity are very bright. Solar power is, also, one of the world's most eco-friendly energy alternatives providing clean and efficient power, the spokesman said.
