'We cannot avoid taxing people' - LTTE Jaffna leader by Jaffna special correspondent It has become unavoidable for us to levy a tax from the people to maintain our cadre. Our leader is exploring other avenues of income to withdraw this tax in the course of time. We are amazed at the way the people support our program to create peace in this land. The last General Election was a contest between the peace loving people and the war loving President. In the end, peace has triumphed, said Mr. Elamparuthi, Jaffna District Political Leader of the LTTE. He was speaking after a party office was opened by Mr. K. Shanmuganathan, Government Agent for Jaffna at Potpaththy road, Kokuvil. Mr. K. Sivaramalingam, Retired Vice Principal, Jaffna Hindu College presided. The meeting was graced by the Heads of the Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths. A large crowd of people were also present. Mr. Elamparuthi further said that he was reminded of what the former Deputy Defence Minister Mr. Ratwatte said when he hoisted the Lion flag in Jaffna after the army captured Valigamam. He said that they had decimated seventy five per cent of the LTTE. After capturing Thenmaradchy, he said at Chavakachcheri, that they had annihilated eighty five per cent of the LTTE. Now when we came through Muhamalai on the 8th instant, the Army General said "Send the 18 LTTE cadre immediately to Jaffna. Then eighty five per cent the problems could be solved". He said they were eager to re-establish the political status and create the climate for the unhampered participation of everyone in the political activities with the full support of the people. A rumour he said is given currency to the effect that the LTTE is going to recruit youngsters to their cadre. "We never recruited or compelled anyone to join us. They come in hordes to join us. That we are going to do is to give our cadre training to be disciplined. Mr. Paapa, another LTTE political stalwart said that the LTTE and the people are one. They are inseparable. The people have the right to criticise them when they go wrong. Today, we have come on an entirely new situation. We want to promote peace with the mass support. |
