by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Following the brutal assault of a doctor inside the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) by an organised gang on New Year's day, Government doctors yesterday urged authorities to take swift action to remove all unauthorised shops and illegal occupants from the hospital. "Illegal boutiques are harbouring thugs inside the hospital premises. Therefore, immediate steps should be taken to remove them," GMOA General Secretary Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya told the Daily News yesterday. He said the thugs even dictate terms to the hospital staff on the allocation of beds to patients and have become a real threat to the hospital staff and the patients. Doctors at the CNH went on strike from Monday following the incident. "However, the strike will spread to other hospitals in Colombo unless immediate steps are taken to resolve our demands," GMOA spokesman Dr. R. Bellana said last evening. This follows a decision taken by the GMOA's Executive Committee yesterday noon. Meanwhile, only in-house patients were being treated at the CNH. "Arrangements have been made to send patients arriving at the CNH to Colombo South and North hospitals," Deputy Director of the CNH Dr. Anil Jasinghe told the Daily News. The GMOA has urged authorities to take swift measures to strengthen security at the hospital. "It is very clear that security lapses at the hospital paved the way for this incident. The police post at the hospital should be strengthened," Dr. Bellana added. Dr. Bellana claims that various irregularities take place in these unauthorised shops in the hospital premises. On Monday evening, a discussion was held between the Director General of Health Dr. A. M. L. Beligaswatta and GMOA representatives on security aspects concerning hospitals. |
