by Trincomalee correspondent The economic development of the Northern and Eastern province solely depends on the development of the Trincomalee harbour. The Minister of Port Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs Rauff Hakeem said in Trincomalee addressing port workers at the SLPA Trincomalee office. Mr. Hakeem said the potential of the Trincomalee harbour should be improved for the economic development of the country. Trincomalee harbour should be developed as a profit-making venture. He also said Trincomalee harbour is one of the two deep sea harbours in the world. Port Development Minister said the construction of a new jetty for Trincomalee port which commenced in 1999 at a cost of Rs. 1,150 m would be completed by August this year. He said the tourist industry should be developed in such a way that foreign tourists should arrive direct to Trincomalee harbour. Later the Minister and his officials inspected the new jetty under construction at China Bay. |
