by Florence Wickramage Special raids and market surveys were intensified during the Sinhala New Year period and immediately prior to it to ensure that innocent consumers are not fleeced by errant traders in the purchase of their requirements. The Commissioner of Internal Trade Ms. Sama R. Kelaniya told the Daily News yesterday that in one raid inspectors had been successful in spotting out an imitation glucose product that is being sold in the market. Glucose had been freely available in the market with its usual brand name. The imitation packet of glucose does not carry the brand name nor the name and address of the producer in one instance and a fake name and address of a producer in another instance. Ms. Kelaniya said that action is now being taken to withdraw the imitation glucose that is now sold. The Commissioner further said that glucose is used by many school children who take part in various types of school activities. She warns parents to ensure that they purchase glucose with its original brand name. The Internal Trade Department had also found PVC pipes in the market which did not conform to the standards required in the finished product. Three persons had been taken into custody in this regard and legal action has been instituted against them. Ms. Kelaniya confirmed that the department had received several complaints from customers about items sold in the market above the fixed prices, and these had been inquired into. But on the whole, the Commissioner said that complaints during this festive season had been far less compared to earlier times before the special programme was launched. The special market surveys and raids program had been a special project of the 100 days programme of the Department of Internal Trade launched under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade the Commissioner observed. |
