Dhaka to help Lanka in training peacekeeping missions

DHAKA, Tuesday (AFP) Bangladesh has agreed to train peacekeepers in Sri Lanka in the event an agreement is reached to end decades of ethnic bloodshed, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando said here Monday.

"I am happy that (Bangladesh) Foreign Minister has responded positively to our request to train (for) peacekeeping" for Sri Lanka, Fernando told private Ekushey Television network after a 90-minute meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Morshed Khan.

Khan, standing by his side, nodded and said Sri Lanka sought Bangladesh's help in the current peace process in Colombo to strike a Danish-brokered deal between the government and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Reports said Sri Lanka has approached among others Bangladesh, currently the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions around the world, for its experience.

Fernando, accompanied by a four-member team, arrived Dhaka Monday on a four-day visit for talks with Khan on topics of mutual interests.

Officials said Fernando, due to meet Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and other government ministers, briefed Bangladesh on the current peace process in Sri Lanka.
