An integrated development program covering the Kurunegala, Puttalam and Kegalle Districts is now being formulated by the North Western Region Development Ministry with a view to usher in an economic revival in the region. A ministry release said this is part of the development program planned by the Ministry to coincide with the Government's 100-days program. The other program envisaged included the revival of dormant industries and introduction of new industries by encouraging investors, small town and estate housing development, enhancement of living condition especially among women and setting up of various institutions to promote good governance in the region. The Ministry has already identified new investors for industrial estates after settling various issues that had delayed their full-scale operations. A small town development plan has also been implemented in the three districts with the assistance of the UDA. Housing facilities are being currently developed in Wimalagama, Yatala and Bogoda Estates in Galigamuwa and Golindawatta in Kegalle. District Secretaries have been directed to implement development projects with Decentralised Budget funds to enhance women's participation in the development process. The Ministry has also set up an Advisory Council comprising academics, entrepreneurs and administrators to obtain advice on matters pertaining to the development of industries, towns infrastructure and human settlements. Guidelines have also been prepared for the setting up of a Regional Development Co-ordinating Committee chaired by the Minister and setting up of village development committees for each Grama Seva Niladhari division. |
