Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya Young business magnate Chandana Karunaratne will be sworn in as the Mayor of Nuwara Eliya today, before Mr. Navin Dissanayake Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries who is also an Attorney-at-Law. Mr. Karunaratne who is the son of late P. D. Karunaratne, who was a leading trader based in Colombo purchasing wholesale vegetables in the hill station has had a long acquaintance with the people of Nuwara Eliya. The new Mayor an old boy of Ananda College was a close ally of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Gamini Dissanayake. Chandana developed his business in Nuwara Eliya and his native birthplace of Piliyandala. He will be the youngest mayor to assume office in Nuwara Eliya and has very ambitious development plans for Nuwara Eliya. He intends making it a tourist destination of international repute. At the same time gigantic plans are afoot to assist the public and the rate payers of the city. As a first step after taking office, he will declare that he will not be the recipient of any allowances and other perks and will not use council vehicles in keeping with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's austerity introductions. Mr. Ponniah Sivarajah, the CWC's choice and nominee as Deputy Mayor will also take his oaths today. Mr. Sivarajah was a close ally of late S. Thondaman and was an old boy of St. Anthony's College, Kandy. The inaugural sessions of the new council meeting will be held on April 19.
