by Sarath Malalasekera Emirates Radio recently invited Sri Lankan veteran broadcaster Vijaya Corea to be on their air waves. Later Vijaya was interviewed and requested to do his own presentation on 90.5 and 97.5 FM - Radio on programme titled "The Better Mix" which draws a very wide audience in the UAE. Vijaya was introduced to the audience by Ron Simson as 'the most popular broadcaster that was on Sri Lankan Radio.' An announcement was made the previous day informing listeners that Sri Lanka's veteran broadcaster and showbiz compere would make his appearance on Radio 2 and any one could address questions to Viyaja by fax or e-mail. Several mail came in from Sri Lanka and Indian listeners. One listener wrote in thanking Emirates Radio for bringing the 'Golden Voice' again to them. On the day following the broadcast over Radio UAE, Sri Lanka's Ambassador in the UAE Janaka Nakkavita congratulated Vijaya for his excellent performance and thanked him for enhancing the image of Sri Lanka during the program. Vijaya had eloquently traced the roots of radio and even referred to the national carrier and its programs from Air Ceylon through to AirLanka and SriLankan Airlines as it stands today. Vijaya Corea had been involved in promotional campaign conducted in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Bangkok and Singapore. Radio in the UAE being comparatively young, Vijaya proudly made known the fact that he was from the pioneer Radio Station in Asia, formerly Radio Ceylon and currently the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, which began in 1925 just two years after the BBC. |
