People's Bank joins solid waste management project

by Florence Wickramage

All seventy branches of the People's Bank in Colombo and Kalutara have entered the pilot Solid Waste Management project of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Assistant General Manager S.Kariyawasam said recently.

The process adopted earlier by the bank to dispose waste paper and discarded bank documents had been by burning under strict supervision. With the introduction of the pilot project to all bank branches, waste paper is now collected and sold to the National Paper Corporation (NPC). About 10 tonnes of waste and discarded documents approximately per month are collected from each of its branches.

The bank however being sensitive to the nature of confidentiality of certain documents that are discarded has taken measures to safeguard the secrecy of such bank documents that are considered waste. An employee of the bank has been detailed to supervise the re-cycling process at the National Paper Corporation's re-cycling plant until such documents and paper are turned into pulp, Mr. Kariyawasam said. He further stated that the revenue collected by the Bank for waste paper sold to the NPC has been set apart for the welfare of those employees who are engaged in this task.

The Bank has launched an awareness programme to educate its customers about the need for a clean environment and management of solid waste. For this purpose collecting bins are being used and the response from customers had been very encouraging, Mr. Kariyawasam said.

The People's Bank has gone a step further in protecting the environment in that the Bank's loan scheme has been reorganised to generate that loan applications for projects that are considered detrimental or unfriendly to the environment, are not approved the Assistant General Manager said.
