by Florence Wickramage A School's Awareness program about Sri Lanka's biodiversity and elephant conservation has been launched in around 300 schools by the Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust, Managing Trustee and Deputy Director of Wildlife Conservation Jayantha Jayewardena told the 'Daily News' yesterday. The awareness programs have been conducted in half-day sessions and is said to have received a good response from children who participate in them. The program consists of a slide and video presentation, lectures, question and answer sessions and a general discussion. A video on Sri Lanka's elephants produced by YA TV is also used in this program. Mr. Jayantha Jayewardena said that a copy of this video has been presented to schools that have a video deck and hopes to present a copy each to schools which wish to join this program. As there is a dearth of wildlife, nature and environment related books in Sinhala, the Trust has taken action to purchase several books which are to be presented to the schools after the program. An education poster done in Sinhala for the Schools Awareness Program and sponsored by Lanka Bell has been distributed to over 400 schools in the Anuradhapura district. The Trust is actively involved in other school programs such as Nature Clubs launched by the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society and hopes to expand these activities to cover more schools in the island Mr. Jayantha Jayawardena said. |
