Mercedes Benz Country Finals: Golf tourney on April 20

by Richard Dwight

What promises to be interesting golfing fare for the fastidious golfer, will be, when the Mercedes Benz Sri Lanka Country Finals are worked off, on Saturday, April 20 on the fairways and greens of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).

This prestigious and much looked forward to Stableford Golf Tournament is being sponsored for the eleventh successive year by Diesel and Motor Engineering Company Ltd (Dimo) and organised and conducted by the RCGC.

This was revealed to the media at a briefing held at the RCGC on Wednesday by the new club captain Lalith Ramanayake.

It's attraction and the popularity this tournament enjoys, Ramanayake stressed, lies in the fact that lavish prizes from the sponsors await the winners and, for the reason that those coming out on top in the three respective groups (A, B & C) will qualify to participate in the Asian Regional finals to be held in Australia whilst the winners and runner-ups, six in number at this tournament in Australia, will be entitled to proceed to Stuttgart, Germany to take part in the world finals to be held later in the year.

Heartening it is to observe the consistency displayed by Dimo in sustaining this country golf finals for the past ten years - where eight of which were played at the RCGC and the last two at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, for the reason that the RCGC was engaged in an extensive redevelopment program. An so it is a welcome return to the RCGC back again for the 11th Mercedes Benz Sri Lanka Golf Country finals.

According to the vice captain of the RCGC Sanath Piyaratne, there will be around 200 participants teeing off in flights of 4 every 7 minutes, commencing at 6.45 a.m. on Saturday, April 20.

The tournament is being conducted on the Stableford format with players being grouped according to their accredited handicaps viz; Group 'A' 0-12, 'B' 13-20 and 'C' 21-24.

Those registering the highest score in their respective groups at the end of the 18th hole will be adjudged as the winners, with their corresponding runners-up who will be sponsored by Dimo to participate in the Asian finals.

Apart from the main trophies there will also be attractive prizes for (a) Nearest to the pin (9th hole), (b) Longest drive, (c) Wooden spoonist, (d) Youngest player, (e) Oldest player and (f) Hole-in-one.

The winner in the Hole-in-one will be offered a return air ticket to Germany including a tour of the Mercedes Benz factory and the museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
