by Ananda Kannangara

The Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) highway is now open for the public and they can freely use it even using their vehicles without any obstacle, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena said at a media briefing yesterday.

Minister Jayawardena also stressed that commercial type of vehicles such as passenger buses and lorries will be permitted to use the highway shortly.

"Since urgent repairs are needed to several dilapidated sections of the A-9 highway we have already released Rs. 25 million to the Government Agent, Vavuniya and the renovation work of the stretch is scheduled to complete as early as possible".

Minister Jayawardena also said that a cultural show with the participation of artistes of all communities to bridge the cultural gap between people of North and South will be held at the Jaffna Central College grounds on April 13 in view of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

"In addition to this we have decided to conduct a 20 day Dharma Charika (Damma tour) from Kataragama to Jaffna on April 21 to enhance the religious harmony among citizens," Minister Jayawardena added.
